Mar 11-Apr 24 Stars, Flowers and Honeynight Aya Takano combines in her work various worlds of art: 19th century Japonism, contemporary manga and science fiction. Placed in an imaginary futuristic world, her main characters consist of cute girls in colourful kimono that reminisce of young girls in the Edo period (ca. 1600-1868) but also of modern women that try to exhibit a high degree of 'cuteness'. The highly acclaimed work of Aya Takano in this exhibition gives insight into one of the main streams of contemporary Japanese popular art and culture. Details SieboldHuis

Since the earthquake and tsunami happened in Japan, the number of orphans has increased to 1584 and it is expected that the figure will rise to 2,000.

One of the serious problems for orphans is that they do not have enough money for a good school, especially if they want to study further. Moreover, the mental damage of the orphans is really deep.

I want to do something to encourage these children. The concert is performed by excellent musicians and special Japanese old instruments like Sho and Koto. You should not miss this beautiful concert and please support tsumami orphans in Japan!!

‘Broken Earth’

Japanese ceramics from the collapsed village Mashiko

This year, Tithe Barn Ceramics Centre is celebrating its 75th anniversary and wants to treat its visitors to a very special exhibition. The world-famous potters’ village of Mashiko, some 90 km northeast of Tokyo, was hit by the March 11 earthquake. The potters lost their homes, workshops and precious kilns. The village boasted a 10,000-year-old ceramics tradition, which, together with the ceramists from this village, is held in high esteem in Japan. The works in this exhibition will be offered for sale and the proceeds will go to the stricken Mashiko potters. € 4,00
