"Japans Weekend" in Den Helder (19-20 June 2010)

On 19 and 20 June, the 4th ‘Japans Weekend’ was held in the Botanical Garden - Oranjerie in Den Helder. Since the first ‘Japans Weekend’ in 2007 this event has been successfully organized by the staff of the Oranjerie Foundation and Mrs. Melany Tegelberg. At the greenhouse, visitors were able to observe and participate in various traditional Japanese arts and crafts such as Bonsai, Ikebana, Origami, Temari, Sushi and Shodo/calligraphy workshops. In addition demonstrations of martial arts, Kyudo and Kenjutsu were given in the Japanese Garden. Mr. Tetsuya Ishii, Minister of the Embassy attended the opening of this event together with Mayor of Den Helder Koen Schuiling, Alderman Turnhout-van den Bosch and landscape architect and one of the founding fathers of this garden  Professor Wiebe Kuitert. This year commemorates the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Japanese garden. On the second day, over 500 visitors came to the now famous ‘Japans Weekend’. Plans are now underway for next year’s event and its 5th anniversary.
