On Sunday 24 May, from 12:00 till 17:00 hours, the annual Japan Market was held at the ‘Rapenburg’ in Leiden. Ambassador Tsuji, the Director of the SieboldHuis Ms. Schiermeier and the organizer of the Japan Market Ms. Trimp opened the market by releasing balloons. Japanese Saturday school student Ms. Nasya Weigand, who won an essay contest on the Japan Market, assisted them.
More than forty stands, representing over 60 Japan related organizations, lined the Rapenburg and introduced all kinds of Japanese culture, from Japanese food such as sushi, takoyaki and gyudon(beef bowl), to bonsai, ikebana, shogi and various books. The Raiden Yokasoi dance group, founded by students of Japanese Studies at Leiden University, added to the festive atmosphere with their lively performance. Many people showing their love of cosplay strolled the market as well. It was great weather and a record number of about 10,000 people visited the Japan market.
