At the invitation of the Supreme Court of Japan, Dr. G.J.M. Corstens, President of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, and Mrs. Corstens visited Japan from Monday, 25 March to Tuesday, 2 April 2013. During his visit President Corstens paid a courtesy call on Mr. Hironobu Takesaki, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan and exchanged views with justices there. He also gave a lecture entitled ‘Terminal care and the criminal law’ at the Tokyo High Court, visited the Legal Training and Research Institute and visited Tokyo University School of Law.
At the weekend of 30 and 31 March Mr. and Mrs. Corstens visited Kyoto and were given a tour of the Katsurarikyu Detached Palace and the Textile Museum of Kawashima Selkon Textiles Company, the latter of which manufactured the tapestries for the walls of the Japanese Room at the Peace Palace in the Hague. He also attended a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony performed by the Urasenke Foundation.
On Monday, 1 April Mr. and Mrs. Corstens were received in audience by Their Imperial Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan at the Imperial Palace. Prior to their visit to Japan, Mr. and Mrs. Corstens were briefed on Japanese politics, economy and culture at a dinner in their honour hosted by the Ambassador of Japan to the Netherlands, Mr. Yasumasa Nagamine.
