At a luncheon in his honour and surrounded by family, friends and former colleagues , Dr. Aaron Pais was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by Ambassador Minoru Shibuya.  In his speech Ambassador Shibuya praised Dr. Pais for his great efforts to support the Japan Prizewinners Programme and for his dedication to promoting academic exchanges between Japan and the Netherlands.  Among the prominent guests were former Prime Minster Dries van Agt, former Vice-Prime Minister Hans Wiegel,  former State Secretary Nel Ginjaar and Professor Arnold Heertje.

Dr. A. Pais

Born in the Hague in 1930 Dr. Pais studied social economy at the Municipal University in Amsterdam.  He held various posts including Amsterdam City Council Member, member of the Provincial Government of North Holland and Professor at the University of Amsterdam.  Dr. Pais was elected member of the Upper House of Parliament in 1977 and served as Minister of Education from the same year to 1981.  From 1982 - 1988 he was Vice-President of the European Investment Bank.  In 1994 he was named Chairman of the Japan Prizewinners Programme.
