On 30 October, a commemorative event was held in Dordrecht to celebrate the anniversary of the Kaiyo-Maru, which was lifted into the water from a dockyard in Dordrecht on 2 November, 150 years ago.
At ‘het Wilgenbos’, the place where the lifting occurred at that time, Ambassador Tsuji and Deputy Mayor of Dordrecht Mr Sleeking unveiled a commemorative plaque under the watchful eye of the Mayor of Dordrecht Mr Brok and the Association of the Kaiyo-Maru Crew Descendants.
Afterwards, Ambassador Tsuji attended and made a speech at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, which is entitled ‘The Kaiyo-Maru, a Japanese warship from Dordrecht’. This exhibition is held until 27 March 2016 and can be visited at ‘Het Hof van Nederland’ in Dordrecht.
