Spring opening ceremony Japanese Garden Clingendael

2016/5/4

4 May 2016

On 28 April, a spring opening ceremony was held at the Japanese Garden at the Clingendael estate. In a large tent, District Director Haagse Hout Mrs Lilianne Blankwaard, Ambassador of Japan Mr Hiroshi Inomata, Mayor of Wassenaar Mr Jan Hoekema and Alderman of The Hague Mr Boudewijn Revis made speeches, in which they spoke of the history of the oldest Japanese garden in The Netherlands and the strong bond between Japan and the Netherlands.
This year, ten different cherry blossom trees were planted along a small path leading to the Japanese garden, thanks to the Municipality of The Hague and a donation from the Japanese non-profit organisation “Ikuoukai”.
As this year’s official opening act, Ambassador Inomata, Mayor Hoekema and Alderman Revis planted one of those cherry blossom trees. Despite showers of rain in the morning, the sunny afternoon was perfect for a stroll through the garden. In the company of their guests, they admired the garden and enjoyed a wonderful performance by two musicians playing the traditional Japanese instruments called Shō and Shakuhachi.

In 2016, the Japanese Garden is open to the public from 30 April to 12 June, daily from 9:00 to 20:00 hours, and from 18 to 23 October, daily from 10:00 to 16:00 hours.
On the website of the City of The Hague, you can download a pamphlet about the Japanese garden. Please click either link below to find more information in your language of choice.
