Japan Market in Leiden
20 May, 2016
On Sunday 15 May, the 9th edition of the annual Japan Market was held at the Rapenburg in Leiden. After short speeches by the Mayor of Leiden Mr. Lenferink, Ambassador Inomata, and director of the SieboldHuis Ms. Schiermeier, the market was officially opened by releasing festive balloons.
Although the weather was quite chilly, over 8.300 people visited the 400 meter long market that spanned from the beginning of the Rapenburg all the way to the Hortus Botanicus. At the more than fifty stands various aspects of Japanese culture were highlighted.
At the National Museum of Antiquities, sport associations impressed visitors with martial arts demonstrations, and at the Hortus Botanicus visitors could enjoy an energetic Yosakoi dance performance.
Next year, on the 4th of June 2017, the Japan Market will celebrate its special 10th anniversary.
