Report: Mr. Sebastian Masuda’s lecture (November 9, 2017)

On the 9th of November, Mr. Sebastian Masuda, Japan Cultural Envoy 2017-2018, gave a lecture at the Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Japan in the Netherlands.
We were very pleased to have Mr. Masuda, who is well known as a pioneer of ‘Harajuku Kawaii’ culture. He gave an interesting lecture about the history of Harajuku, the origin of ‘Kawaii’ culture and how it spread all over the world, and his works and projects. In addition, he explained about his current project in Amsterdam, where he is working with local artists. After the lecture, there was time for questions and for attendees to talk with Mr. Masuda in person.

Theme: “Introducing ‘kawaii’ to the world”
Mr. Sebastian Masuda is well known as an inventor of ‘Harajuku Kawaii’ culture. He has been staying at NDSM in Amsterdam since September this year as Japan’s Culture Envoy 2017-2018, and is currently working on his new performance art project with local artists. In this lecture, Mr. Masuda will talk about the history of Kawaii culture, the Kawaii community that continues to spread all over the world, and his new project in Amsterdam.

Mr. Masuda was born in 1970. He is a visiting professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design and Yokohama College of Art and Design. After active involvement in theater performances and modern art, he opened “6%DOKIDOKI” in Harajuku in 1995, a shop with the concept of “Sensational Kawaii”. Through his world tour titled “the Harajuku Kawaii Experience”, which started in 2009, Mr. Masuda has been actively promoting Harajuku culture on a global scale. He gained worldwide attention for his PV production for “PONPONPON”, the debut single of Japanese pop icon “Kyary Pamyu Pamyu”. He has also been active as an artist and art director to contextualize Harajuku Kawaii culture by, for example, establishing the concept restaurant “KAWAII MONSTER CAFÉ” in Tokyo.
Mr. Masuda’s first solo exhibition “Colorful Rebellion - Seventh Nightmare” opened in New York in 2014. He is now working to launch a participatory art project called “Time After Time Capsule” in ten cities around the world in 2020.
