Report: Lecture by Shihori Oikawa, Japanese National Hockey Team Player (February 27, 2019)

On February 27th, Ms. Shihori Oikawa, hockey player of the Japanese National Team gave a lecture at Zuyd University.
Ms. Oikawa plays for Eindhoven’s hockey club Oranje-Rood in the premier league of the Netherlands. She is also a player for the Japanese National Team and was awarded with the Female Player of the Year award of the Asia cup 2018, which the Japanese team won. During the lecture, she talked about the challenges she faces as the first Japanese female hockey player belonging to a professional team abroad. For the students at Zuyd University who are studying Japanese, she touched upon the differences she experiences between Japan and the Netherlands. Thanks to hockey being quite popular in the Netherlands, it is easier to connect to fans of the sport and she can easily acquire the gear she needs. Regarding the different food culture of the Netherlands, she enthusiastically explained that she has cooked Japanese food for her teammates. In addition, she takes private English classes twice a week and talked about her efforts to overcome difficulties adjusting to life in the Netherlands. After her presentation, there was a lively Q&A with the students.
