Report: Lecture by Takako Hikotani, Gerald L. Curtis Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy (March 6, 2019)

On March 6th, Dr. Takako Hikotani, Gerald L. Curtis Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy, gave a lecture at Leiden University.
Dr. Hikotani gave a lecture on Japanese foreign policy titled “Japan and the Future of the Liberal International Order”. She explained Japanese diplomatic strategy in detail both from a domestic and international perspective, taking the National Security Strategy set in 2013 as an example, as well as the current discussion about the amendment of the Japanese constitution, the alliance between Japan and the US and the dispatching of the Japanese Self Defence Forces abroad. Related to these topics, she talked about the challenges ahead for Japan. After her lecture, there were interesting questions from the participants, mainly students from the Japan Studies program of Leiden University.
