On Sunday 9 March 2025, “The 36th Japanese Speech Contest / In commemoration of the 425th anniversary of Japan-Netherlands exchange” was held at Leiden University.
At the opening of the contest, Ambassador Minami thanked all the sponsors and organizations for the prizes and cooperation in judging over the years and stated that this was the 36th edition of the competition in the 425-year long history of exchange of the two nations.
In this speech contest, contestants present their speeches in front of a panel of judges and visitors, which are then questioned and evaluated by the judges.
It is a tense stage for the contestants, but it is also an opportunity to test their Japanese language skills.
We confirmed that the Japanese speech contest is an opportunity for learners of Japanese to grow, as some of those who were unable to win prizes in the previous year's competition tried again and won prizes this time.
The Winners were awarded certificates, trophies and luxury prizes from the various sponsoring organizations, while all contestants also received participation prizes.
