Signing ceremony for voluntary contributions by the Government of Japan to the Trust Funds for Syria Missions and for the Implementation of Article X (Ukraine) of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (March 5, 2026)

On 5 March, the Government of Japan has voluntarily contributed 110,429 Euro to the Trust Funds for Syria Missions and 85, 889 Euro to the Trust Fund for the Implementation of Article X of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The voluntary contributions were formalized on 5 March 2026 in a signing ceremony held between Ambassador MICHII and the OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Arias at the OPCW’s Headquarters in The Hague. Through this contribution, funds will be provided via the OPCW to support the chemical weapons destruction program in Syria and the training project to enhance response capabilities towards chemical weapons use incidents in Ukraine, respectively.
Ambassador MICHII expressed gratitude for the OPCW’s ongoing activities and stated that the Government of Japan supports all OPCW efforts addressing the use or potential use of chemical weapons including the case related to Syria and Ukraine. He further noted that this contribution reflects Japan’s unwavering commitment to advancing progress on the issues in Syria and Ukraine, as well as to the OPCW’s mission to achieve a world free of chemical weapons.
Director-General Arias expressed his gratitude to the Government of Japan for its continued political and financial support of the OPCW’s mission to achieve a world free of chemical weapons. He also emphasized that further advancing the chemical weapons destruction program in Syria and ensuring the capacity to respond swiftly to chemical weapons threats in Ukraine are crucial elements for the effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and upholding the global norm against chemical weapons.
