Visit to the Netherlands by Minister Kimi Onoda (September 11, 2026)
2026/9/18
On 11 September, Minister Kimi Onoda visited the Netherlands, accompanied by Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii.
In Delft, Minister Onoda visited Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), QuTech and HoQ, and exchanged views with representatives of TU Delft, QuTech, QDNL and Dutch quantum start-ups on research and development, human resource development, commercialisation and research security in the field of quantum technology.
In The Hague, Minister Onoda held separate meetings with Mr Thierry Aartsen, Minister of Work and Participation, Ms Rianne Letschert, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, and Ms Heleen Herbert, Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate. They exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including social integration and labour market participation of foreign nationals, human resource development, international brain circulation, research cooperation, research security, science, technology and innovation, AI, quantum technology and economic security.
During her meeting with Minister Herbert, a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between Japan and the Netherlands on quantum science, technology and innovation was signed.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the conclusion of the Japan–Netherlands Agreement on Co-operation in Science and Technology. Building on the longstanding cooperation between our two countries, Minister Onoda’s visit and the signing of the MoC provide further momentum for collaboration in research, talent exchange, innovation and economic security, including in critical technology fields such as quantum technology.
The Embassy of Japan in the Netherlands will continue to support exchanges among the governments, universities and research institutions, and businesses of both countries, and to contribute to the further development of Japan–Netherlands relations.
