Dear everyone,
I am Rokuichiro MICHII. I assumed my position as Ambassador of Japan to the Netherlands on December 8th.
As you are well aware, the Netherlands and Japan share more than 400 years of history of exchanges and collaboration, during which exceptionally close ties have been cultivated, including the warm relations between the Royal and Imperial Families as well as active exchanges across a wide range of fields. I recognize that this year has marked a significant step in deepening the already strong bilateral relationship even further through Osaka–Kansai Expo and the 425th Anniversary of Japan–Netherlands Exchanges. I intend to make efforts to further develop the partnership with the Netherlands—an indispensable and trusted partner—even amid the rapidly changing international environment. I would also hope to draw upon the experience I have gained in international law and other fields during my career in engaging with international organizations based in The Hague, such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and the Register of Damage for Ukraine (RD4U).
In the Netherlands, coalition negotiations are underway following the October’s general election. I will strive to engage closely with the Dutch government, the Japanese community, Japanese companies, and the Dutch private sector to ensure that the Netherlands-Japan relationship—underpinned by centuries of shared history—remains strong regardless of the political landscape. In all areas, including politics, the economy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, I will work to further strengthen our bilateral ties and, together with the Netherlands, forge toward the realization of a peaceful and prosperous international community based on the rule of law and other fundamental values.
Coming in tandem with these diplomatic efforts, ensuring the safety and security of our nationals residing in the Netherlands is the Embassy’s yet another foremost priority. While trying to secure the safety of our community, all Embassy staff and I will do our utmost to support your endeavors so that your activities in the Netherlands may be fruitful and flourishing.
With your understanding, cooperation and candid feedback, I look forward to carrying out my role and responsibilities as Ambassador to the Netherlands.
