About the Consumption Tax Exemption System (Notice of Transition to the Refund Method)
2026/10/14
1. From November 1, 2026, the consumption tax exemption system will transition to a refund method. Previously, eligible tax-free shoppers purchased tax-free goods at tax-excluded prices (tax-free). However, after the transition to the refund method, tax-free goods will be purchased at regular prices (tax-included), and after it is confirmed at the airport or other locations (Customs) upon departure within 90 days from the purchase date that the goods are being taken out of the country, a refund equivalent to the consumption tax amount will be issued by the tax-free shop or other locations (excluding tax-free shops in airport transit areas).
